Interview founders, publish the numbers, and sell access to the archive — about $1M a year off 4,000+ case studies, and the reason a rival concluded the moat is simply five years of interviews nobody else wants to do
4,000+ case studies accumulated since 2017 · at least 4–5 staff · benchmarked in the same conversation against a paid ideas newsletter at $199/year doing about $200K/year

This entry comes from an unusual source: a Chinese-language Twitter Space among indie hackers building for Western markets, in which one participant is openly researching how to build a competitor to Starter Story and reports what he found. That is the framing to keep in mind throughout — nobody in the room works there. His research: Starter Story monetises through three lines, paid content, sponsorships and affiliate marketing; total revenue is roughly $1 million a year; it started in 2017, so about five years of operation at the time of the conversation; it has accumulated over 4,000 case studies; and it now employs at least four or five people. His conclusion about the moat is stated as plainly as anything in this index: "he has 4,000-plus case studies, which is the only reason he can sell at that price." Then, immediately, he rejects the plan for himself — five years is too long a timeline. The reason he was investigating at all is that another participant, referred to as David, had just found a content vein that was working. Tweeting about "boring business" — deliberately dull companies that quietly make serious money — had taken his account from 800 followers to over 6,000 in roughly three weeks. His first breakout post did around 20,000 impressions where his previous posts had done far less; subsequent posts hit 300,000, and he was averaging tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands per post. Enough people had DM'd him asking permission to copy his format that he half-jokingly described having stumbled onto a traffic formula. He was planning to turn it into a media property called Boring Cash Cow. Our read: the value of this transcript is not the Starter Story numbers. It is watching three competent operators price out the build, in public, and arrive at a mixed verdict.

Every figure attributed to it comes from one participant's own desk research, reported conversationally in Mandarin during a Twitter Space, with no source, screenshot, dashboard or third-party data cited — and the participant's motive is that he was evaluating whether to build a competitor. Creator-reported and unverified: roughly $1M/year total revenue across paid content, sponsorships and affiliate marketing; founded 2017; 4,000+ case studies; at least 4–5 staff. The comparison business — a paid newsletter selling packaged micro-SaaS ideas at $199/year for roughly $200K/year — cannot be identified: its name is rendered in the auto-captions as "microsoft ideas" and the speaker only recalls the handle beginning with "open," so we have deliberately not guessed at a company name and that data point should be treated as anecdotal. The participants' own account metrics are first-hand and more reliable in kind, though still self-reported: 800 to 6,000+ followers in about three weeks, a first breakout post at roughly 20,000 impressions rising to 300,000, a daily range of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of impressions, nearly 200 followers from one gated-content post, and 1,800+ followers gained in five months by another participant. The audience thresholds for monetisation (~100 followers for a sharp niche, ~5,000 for broad content) are explicitly presented as something one participant read elsewhere, not as measured results. Region is null: no country, city or founder name is given for Starter Story anywhere in the discussion, and the participants being Chinese speakers building for Western markets tells us nothing about where the analysed business operates. "Boring Cash Cow" (rendered "Boring Cash Calm" in the captions) was pre-revenue and unlaunched at the time of recording, which is why it is not a separate entry. Other businesses mentioned in the same recording — a Figma batch-data plugin with 1,700+ users, a Telegram bot with ~700 users, a Polish build-in-public studio, and an ad-tech company raising around $2M — have no revenue figures and are excluded.
