Makinde Azeez started Naijaloaded after secondary school, while waiting for university admission and taking computer and web-design classes. The original idea was a broad Nigerian information portal: news, articles, music, and video. He says the business began in 2009 and made money within its first month, but the meaningful scale came later. With little money for advertising, he competed through compressed content, fast loading, and close attention to what Nigerian internet users wanted to consume. A music-download configuration became a particularly strong wedge because visitors could download an MP3 rather than wait for it to stream. Traffic eventually reached millions of people a month, with the founder recalling 20 million users in Google Analytics and an Alexa ranking as high as number four in Nigeria after Google and YouTube. By 2011, he says Google AdSense revenue was above $80,000 per month, with monthly results generally between $50,000 and $90,000 for about two years. The site later expanded into NL TV, podcasts, shows, music promotion, and NL Exchange.
