PSPDFKit began as a PDF viewing framework for iOS, when the new iPhone and iPad ecosystem lacked a suitable embedded viewer. Peter Steinberger built an initial magazine reader, then made the underlying developer kit available to companies. Jonathan Rhyne joined after serving as Peter’s attorney and seeing a commercial opportunity in the web store. At that point, the business was doing about $20K MRR. Rhyne changed the model toward subscriptions, replaced one-size pricing with sales-led, value-based deals, and offered flexible structures such as revenue shares for early companies. From roughly $250K ARR, revenue reached $1M ARR in about eight months; it later grew to $5M around 2018 and $12M by 2021. The founder said the company remained bootstrapped and profitable through $12M ARR. Later, PSPDFKit expanded across web, mobile, server-side PDF tools, and workflow products. At the interview it reported multiple eight figures in revenue, about 150 employees, and operations in 27 countries. Those figures are founder-reported, not audited in the interview.
