ProvenStartups files 28 cases in its Shopify and AI e-commerce set. Ten are Shopify businesses in the strict sense: six apps sold to merchants, four stores selling products. The apps report monthly recurring revenue, from about $10K MRR to $250K+/mo. The stores almost never do — that gap tells you which side to copy.

How do Shopify apps and Shopify stores differ as businesses?
An app sells software to merchants and bills every month, so its revenue arrives as a subscription figure a partner dashboard can prove. A store sells products to shoppers and usually reports gross sales, which still contain product cost, ad spend and refunds. Only one of those numbers survives inspection.
Every figure carries an evidence grade. ✅ is third-party verified: a dashboard or ledger someone outside the business has seen. 🗣 is founder-reported. 📎 is creator-relayed — a video host repeating a number. 🔮 is unproven.
Across the ten, the only ✅ is an app — Profit AI, read off the Shopify partner dashboard on camera — and the only 🔮 is a store, an information-arbitrage dropshipping operation claiming $180K in 30 days. App billing is auditable by design; store revenue is whatever the operator calls revenue.
Which AI-built Shopify apps and stores have revenue evidence?
Six apps and four stores, apps first. The apps report monthly recurring revenue; the stores report cumulative sales, lifetime GMV or a media valuation. Read the evidence column before the revenue column: the two largest headline numbers here are the two you should trust least.
| Case | What it sells | Reported result | Evidence | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Profit AI | App → merchants | $30K MRR app + just under $40K MRR services | ✅ Verified | 1 |
| Atlas | App → merchants | $250K+/mo MRR | 🗣 Founder | 2 |
| Storemapper | App → merchants | Reported $25K/mo; $19–$59/mo plans | 📎 Creator | 1 |
| SuperLemon | App → merchants | Reported $25K/mo; 15,000+ stores | 📎 Creator | 1 |
| Cleverific | App → merchants (bought) | Bought at ~$10K MRR for ~2x revenue | 🗣 Founder | 2 |
| Identixweb | 13-app portfolio | 100,000+ installs; ~70 staff; BSE SME listed | 🗣 Founder | 3 |
| Zendrop AI generator | Store + community | $1.7M cumulative store sales (GMV, not profit) | 🗣 Founder | 2 |
| Calming Blankets | DTC store | $10M+ sales, $1.5M profit in year one, then a $1M+ loss | 🗣 Founder | 2 |
| Medvy | DTC store | Media-reported ~$1.8B; a copycat did $400+ on day two | 📎 Creator | 3 |
| AI Solo E-commerce | Dropship store | Claimed $180K in 30 days; $7 cost, $45 price | 🔮 Unproven | 3 |
Tier is our build-difficulty band, 1 being the most reachable for one person. Every Tier 1 case here is an app; the two store headlines you should trust least are Tier 3. The other 18 sit around the ecosystem; the built-with-AI index covers their tools.

What does a working AI-built Shopify app look like?
Smaller than the headline. Profit AI has done $147,000 total since launching in December, but underneath that sit 122 app users with 38–39 paying, and 47 installs against 43 uninstalls in the period shown. The business is real. So is the churn, and nobody puts churn in a thumbnail.
The build is the least impressive part, which is the point: download the spreadsheet as a CSV, upload it to Cursor, say build it, then identify every way Cursor got it wrong. The paid plan fell from $5,000/mo to $800/mo once it stopped being a bespoke service. More in apps built with Cursor.
Two plainer apps show the ceiling. Storemapper is one map, one search box and a CSV importer, reported at $25K/mo. SuperLemon redelivers Shopify's own abandoned-cart data over WhatsApp from $9.99/mo, across 15,000+ stores. Both are 📎, so read them as directional. Each answers one question the platform leaves unanswered; that, not the feature, is the lesson.
You need not write the app. Cleverific was bought at roughly $10K MRR for about 2x revenue, $70K seller-financed, and has run ten years since; comparable apps now go for 3–5x.
Do AI-generated Shopify stores actually make money?
Some do, but none of our four store cases publishes a monthly profit figure, and one is filed as a cautionary tale. The strongest store claim — $1.7M — is cumulative GMV from one store. Gross sales are not income, and AI store generators make them cheap to manufacture.
Watch what the Zendrop AI store generator founder charges for. Not stores — store-building. A free generator with an official Shopify partnership pulls beginners in; the money arrives through a daily-livestream coaching community and supply. He sells shovels.
Calming Blankets deserves a second read: $10M+ in sales and $1.5M profit in year one, $2.5M in year two, one month at $500K profit, an offer above $10M turned down — then a loss of over $1M across the next twelve months, after launching ten more brands off the winner.
Medvy generated almost every face in its ad library. Media reported a ~$1.8 billion solo business; the creator who copied it did over $400 on day two, $100 of it profit. Only the smaller number was observed. Elsewhere in the set, videos that could not sell on a founder's own Shopify store did $300,000–$500,000 through one AI affiliate account on Amazon — owning the checkout is not always the win.

What would we build in the Shopify ecosystem today?
An app, or the layer beside it — not a store. Merchant-facing software bills monthly, proves itself on a partner dashboard, and carries no inventory. Our order of preference: buy a small app, build a one-feature app, sell to agencies, take referral revenue on work you already do.
- 1.Take the recurring referral. Shopify partners earn 20% of the merchant's plan, recurring: $6/mo on Basic ($30), $16 on Grow ($80), $60 on Advanced ($300), plus 20% of Plus platform fees — near a $460/mo floor per Plus merchant. The breakdown is 📎; verify current tiers on Shopify's pricing page.
- 2.Sell to the agency, not the brand. Hero Analytics reports ~$96.2K MRR and $1M+ ARR in 19 months 🗣: one agency holding 30 brands is 30 customers in a single sale.
- 3.Own a market nobody staffs. A Porto agency pushed Shopify to staff Portugal, then took 32+ Plus accounts as the country went from about 3 Plus brands to nearly 40 🗣 — positioning, not a payday.
- 4.Do not skip compliance. Postscript ran a human sales floor in Phoenix for years before shipping an AI agent: one non-compliant SMS carries $1,500 of exposure under the US Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
One calibration: PhotoRoom does $220M/yr with 50 people ✅ by selling better product photos to people already making money — merchant software whose return on the fee is arithmetic the buyer can do.

Frequently asked questions
Do Shopify apps make more money than Shopify stores?
In this set, apps disclose more, and better. Six merchant-facing apps report monthly figures from about $10K MRR at acquisition to $250K+/mo, and the only third-party-verified case here is an app. The four stores report cumulative sales, GMV or a media valuation instead — a gap in evidence quality, not proof stores earn less.
Can you build a Shopify app with AI if you cannot code?
Partly. The clearest case here describes uploading a spreadsheet as a CSV to an AI coding tool, asking it to build the app, then fixing everything the model got wrong. That last step is the job: you still have to read the output, handle merchant data safely, and pass app review.
How much do Shopify partner referrals pay?
Twenty percent of the merchant's plan, recurring for the life of the store: about $6 a month on Basic, $16 on Grow and $60 on Advanced, plus 20% of Shopify Plus platform fees, which puts one Plus merchant near a $460 monthly floor. A mixed 25-store portfolio is described as roughly $1,000 a month.
Is an AI-generated dropshipping store a good first business?
We would not start there. The dropshipping case in this set is graded unproven, its claimed $180K in 30 days has nothing behind it, and its margins rest on buying at $7 and selling at $45. The operator who scaled hardest on that side sells store-building, not stores.
