A page that shows a blank white screen pulls 800,000 monthly visits and an estimated $1,500-$2,500 a month, because nobody arriving is trying to buy anything — the RPM lesson every boring-tool builder skips.
whitescreen.dev: 435,000 monthly visits, 2 years old, 63% US traffic, 15,000 backlinks but only 83 'best links' · whitis.com: 33,000 monthly visits on DR 13 · deadpixeltest.org: 40,000 monthly visits · 'black screen' = 600,000 searches/month · estimated ad revenue: $1,500-$2,500/month

Frey Chu found whitescreen.dev the way its users do: he was trying to concentrate during a morning deep-work session, searched for a blank white screen to park on his second monitor, and used it. Then he looked it up in Ahrefs and found 435,000 monthly visits, 63% of it US traffic, on a domain only two years old. That combination — enormous search volume, trivial build, young competitor — is the classic boring-tool signal, so he dug further and found the category leader, whitescreen.online, at 800,000 monthly visits, plus a weak player, whitis.com, still pulling 33,000 monthly visits on a domain rating of 13. He built and deployed his own competitor, widescreen.ai, in about a day of vibe coding with Claude Code, including a three-hour livestreamed build. Then, after shipping, he did the monetisation research he should have done first — and concluded the category leader is probably making $1,500-$2,500 a month, not the $10,000-$12,000 he had originally assumed by applying his directory RPMs. Our read: this is the most useful entry in the boring-tool category precisely because the number is disappointing. The build was correct, the keyword research was correct, and the business was still a bad trade — and the reason is a single variable most builders never check.

The traffic figures (800,000 and 435,000 monthly visits, the 33,000 and 40,000 comparisons, 63% and 35% US splits, 15,000 backlinks / 83 best links, 600,000 monthly searches for 'black screen') are read off Ahrefs on screen and described aloud — third-party estimates, and Ahrefs traffic estimates routinely diverge from analytics reality. The revenue figure is the important caveat: $1,500-$2,500/month is the creator's own estimate after research, not a number either site's owner disclosed, and his first estimate for the same site was $10,000-$12,000/month, so his own error bar on this class of guess is roughly 5x. No owner was interviewed, no ad-network statement was shown. His own site, widescreen.ai, had just been deployed and submitted for indexing at the time of recording, with no traffic or revenue data at all.
