A testimonial-collection tool that reached $1M ARR with no viral launch, after Reddit, the indie-hacker community, Slack and partnerships all failed and SEO plus affiliates quietly worked
no viral launch · SEO and affiliates are the top two channels · took multiple months of small strategic changes before growth was measurable
They tried Reddit, the indie-hacker community, Slack and partnerships and none of it moved the needle — the thing that got them to $1M ARR was months of unglamorous SEO and an affiliate programme, aimed at customers who were not other builders.

This entry comes from a research video, not an interview. The creator spent several days going through indie-developer communities to work out what the people making money were doing differently from the people who were not, and Senja is his cleanest counter-example. His account of it: "Senja, that collects testimonials. You've probably heard of him or at least seen it somewhere. They didn't have a viral launch on Twitter. They tried everything from Reddit, indie hacking community, Slack, partnership. None of them had any meaningful amount of impact on their growth. And right now, SEO and affiliates are top distribution for them. It took them multiple months of small strategic changes to see measurable growth. And right now, they're doing $1 million ARR." That paragraph is the whole case, and it is worth reading twice because of what it excludes. There is no launch story. There is no Product Hunt day. There is no thread that took off. The channels indie hackers reflexively reach for — Reddit, the community, Slack groups, partnerships — are listed explicitly as things that were tried and did not work. The reason the creator holds Senja up is the argument the rest of his video makes: the indie-hacker scene has become an echo chamber where builders sell to other builders, because builders only know builders' problems. His framing is "exactly like selling shovels in a gold rush." Senja sells to anyone who needs social proof — marketers, agencies, course creators, SaaS companies — which is a market, not a bubble. His supporting numbers on the scene, assembled from mixing stats across analyses: 50-60% of indie hackers make no money at all; of those who do, 70% make under $1,000; only 10-20% are in the $1,000-5,000 band; and roughly 1% are above $50,000.
The list of things that did not work is unusually specific, which is what makes it useful: Reddit, the indie-hacker community, Slack groups and partnerships were all tried, and "none of them had any meaningful amount of impact on their growth."

Data credibility: Thin provenance, credible shape — read with that in mind. The source is a single 477-view research video by a creator who spent several days going through indie-developer communities; Senja's founders do not appear and are not named. The $1 million ARR figure is reported, not shown: no dashboard, no screenshot, no citation, no pricing, no customer count, no churn, no team size and no costs. What we consider well-supported is the narrative structure rather than the number, because the failed-channel list is specific and cuts against the usual growth story ('they tried everything from Reddit, indie hacking community, Slack, partnership. None of them had any meaningful amount of impact'), and nobody invents that kind of detail. Supporting claims in the same video are of mixed quality: the Pieter Levels point about only a few percent of users coming from Twitter is attributed to him directly; the '60% of traffic from SEO and referrals' founder is shown but not named; the '$40,000 a month building scheduling software for car dealerships' figure is a third-hand Reddit quote and should be treated as an anecdote, not a case study. The earnings distribution stats (50-60% make nothing; 70% of earners under $1,000; 10-20% at $1,000-5,000; ~1% above $50,000) are the creator's own words 'from mixing stats across different analyses' with no sources given. The vertical SaaS market figures (~30% of SaaS, 18-22% growth versus 12-15% horizontal, ~half the market by 2030) are also uncited.
Subscription revenue from businesses rather than from builders, which is the decision this whole case turns on.
Two channels compound here and they reinforce each other. SEO is the larger, and for this product the search demand is literal: people type the job they need done, so a tool that does exactly that job ranks against queries with buying intent rather than browsing intent.
This is the part most founders do not survive, and here it ran for multiple months. The trap is named precisely: the boring work has a long feedback loop, so the easier alternative is "getting a dopamine hit by making product updates on Twitter and indie hacking community thinking you actually made progress."
