An email-based AI learning and family communication service for incarcerated people, paid for by their families.
$1.5M lifetime revenue · about 30,000 people have tried it
Build around the channel your customer is allowed to use: Parakeet turned prison email into an AI interface and let families pay for access.

Jordan Rejaud built Parakeet Chat after hearing from a former freelance client who had gone to prison. The client described existing prison services as expensive and poor quality, and the prison environment made ordinary web-based validation impractical. Jordan spoke with contacts on the inside, built an MVP, and released it to that closed community. He says he reached 200 paying users within a month and became profitable in the second month, after building the payment system. Parakeet Chat lets incarcerated people email a dedicated address; a bot processes the message, uses AI services or retrieves information, then sends a response. Common uses include learning about legal rights and case law, getting general answers, and communicating with family. The user is inside; the paying customer is usually a family member outside. Plans cost $15 or $20 per month, with a yearly discount. Jordan reports a little over $300,000 revenue in 2025, $1.5 million lifetime revenue, around 30,000 people who have tried it, nearly 100,000 family connections, and about 9 million messages sent.
For a service entering a closed institution, start with trusted access and a narrow promise. Jordan used contacts inside prisons to put an MVP in front of people who could not simply click a public landing page.

Data credibility: Jordan Rejaud states the figures himself in a Starter Story interview: a little over $300K revenue in 2025, $1.5M lifetime, about 30,000 people who have tried it, nearly 100,000 family connections and about 9 million messages. He says last month’s MRR can be checked on TrustMRR, but no dashboard is shown in the interview, so revenue, pricing and the claim of profitability from month two are unaudited founder statements.
The first revenue arrived after Jordan paired the MVP with a payment system in the second month. The core commercial decision was to separate the user from the buyer: incarcerated people use the service, while family members outside pay a monthly SaaS fee.
Parakeet Chat’s growth loop is built into a community where users have few easy ways to discover services. Jordan says early users showed the product to others, and the referrals spread by word of mouth.
A service for incarcerated users can feel quiet from the founder’s side: access is constrained, feedback travels through intermediaries, and a stalled rollout may reflect institutional friction rather than lack of demand.
