When GasBuddy started, it faced a classic deadlock: real-time gas prices have no official source and nobody wants to contribute them voluntarily — you drive past a gas station, so why would you pull over and get out your phone to tell strangers what a gallon costs there today? GasBuddy didn't buy the data, and it didn't send people around town photographing price signs.
