Michael Clark and his wife Hanny built The Flower Letters from a simple physical-media idea: send readers a continuing story as real mail. Hanny was already selling her floral paintings through Instagram, often for a few hundred dollars and sometimes up to $1,000. While looking for a way to build an email list, the couple imagined sending a chapter by post. The product became a year-long narrative delivered in 24 letters, two each month. They launched in 2020 at $12 per month, with paper, postage, envelopes and extras costing about $2 to $3 per subscriber at their early volume. By the end of the year they had around 3,000 customers and about $36,000 in monthly recurring revenue. Michael says they crossed $5 million in 2024 and $7 million the following year. They now mail about 120,000 letters a month, have sent 3.5 million letters in total and run several stories and subscription options. The audience skews female, ages 35 and up, and the company describes Mother's Day as its biggest selling season.
The first 33 signups came after Michael and Hanny posted the idea on a dedicated Flower Letters Instagram account. Their early test had a useful advantage: Hanny already had an audience and proof that people would buy her creative work, but they did not treat friends and relatives as the target market.

Data credibility: Co-founder Michael Clark states the $5M (2024) and $7M (last year) revenue, 120,000 letters a month, 3.5 million letters mailed, ~5% yearly churn, $2.6M Meta spend last year, an early $15–$20 acquisition cost and $2–$3 early materials cost per subscriber. The ~3,000 customers and ~$36,000 a month at the end of 2020 were put by the host and confirmed by Michael. No dashboard, filing or third-party data is shown.
The first product was priced at $12 per month for two letters, and the first cohort validated that readers would pay for an unfolding story delivered physically. Hanny wrote the fiction and created the visual touches, while Michael handled the business side.
The growth loop combines more stories, giftability and a first-party audience. Each new story gives existing subscribers a reason to add another subscription and gives gift buyers a different recipient or occasion to shop for.
A physical subscription asks founders to keep producing and mailing before the audience is large enough to make the work feel easy.
