A paid translation app competing head-on with free Google Translate — and clearing $50K a month by being better at the parts Google stopped caring about.

Dialogue is the app Jason Lee opens his teardown with, and he picks it first because it violates the rule most founders follow without examining it. It's a translation app. It costs money. Google Translate is free, built by one of the largest companies on earth, and pre-installed on much of the planet. Dialogue does $50,000 a month anyway, a figure Lee sources from Sensor Tower. His explanation of the gap: "If you use free apps before, it's not always the best, even if it's built by huge companies like Google. For example, I saw the other day that people are complaining about how the UI design is bad and this translation doesn't always work and a lot of times it's not accurate. So these guys noticed that and made a much better version of it." The strategic point he draws is the one worth keeping: "Google may not be spending tons of money and time to improve that particular app. Cuz they might be focusing on other things. So that is the opportunity for smaller players to take a chunk of the market." Our read: this is the most under-exploited pattern in consumer software. Big companies have hundreds of products and finite attention. A product that is strategically important to them gets improved; a product that is merely present gets maintained. The maintained ones are open.

The $50K/month is therefore a third-party estimate of gross store revenue, not a founder disclosure and not profit. Product features (translation quality fix, AI grammar cleanup, Apple Watch integration) are described by the creator from using and reviewing the app. Pricing, subscriber count, costs, and team size are not disclosed anywhere.
