How to Earn Money From Shopify: The Models That Show Receipts

There are four ways money reaches you through Shopify, and they are not equal: selling digital products, selling physical products, earning recurring Shopify Partner commissions, and building stores or apps for other merchants. Across the 41 e-commerce and physical-product businesses we have indexed, only 6 disclose a clean monthly figure, and their median is $33K/mo against a full range of $6/mo to $400K/mo.

The ranking below is by which mechanism carries the income in our data — not by which gets the most YouTube videos.

How do people earn money from Shopify?

Ranked by income actually delivered: digital products, then service and build work, then physical products, then Partner commissions as a slow compounding layer.

Six out of 41 is a small sample, and we would rather say so. The range runs $6/mo to $400K/mo — a 66,000x spread that makes any single "average Shopify store income" figure meaningless.

One honest caveat: this index over-represents businesses that worked and chose to publish numbers. Nobody records a video about the store that did $200 and closed. Use $33K/mo to compare models, not as a forecast for yours.

The revenue models, and which one actually carries the money

Digital products dominate our disclosing set. Shopify's costs are fixed per month rather than per unit, so a $50 template and a $50 blanket cost the same to host and very different amounts to fulfil.

ModelWhat it pays (from our index)What it costs to run
Digital products$33,108/month at the top of our disclosing setPlatform fee plus payment processing; no COGS, no shipping
Plugin / tool sales$12K-$13K/mo consistentlySolo build time, ongoing support, marketplace fees
Service and build work~$400K/month across businesses at the largest indexed operatorTeam payroll, client acquisition, delivery hours
Rank-and-rent lead sites$35K/mo personally, $104K/mo company-wideDomains, SEO time, lead-gen infrastructure
Affiliate directories$3,000-$5,000/month per directoryContent build, then near-zero maintenance
Partner referral commissions$6/mo on Basic, $16 on Grow, $60 on AdvancedNothing recurring — but you must place the merchant first

Check tiers against Shopify's published pricing and processing costs in the Shopify Help Center on payment fees.

The Partner row deserves care. 20% recurring sounds enormous until you compute it: 20% of a $30 Basic plan is $6/mo. A described portfolio of 15 Basic + 5 Grow + 3 Advanced + 2 Plus stores is roughly $1,000/mo. Shopify Plus pays 20% of total platform fees, so at least ~$460/mo per merchant against the $2,300 minimum, and 20% of $5,000-$10,000 for larger brands.

What this looks like at real businesses

  • ·[Molly Keyser's digital product business and the Freedom Creator Club membership](/projects/molly-keyser-one-product-one-funnel-digital-products) — $33,108/month, founder-reported. Around $475,000 in sales last year, of which she paid herself about $300,000. Students cited: Brenda, $33,072 in three weeks from a sewing-boutique course; Lacey, 65 membership members in 24 hours. One digital product, one funnel.
  • ·[Website Landlord (Rank-and-Rent Local Service Sites)](/projects/website-landlord-rank-and-rent-local-leadgen) — $35K/mo personally, $104K/mo company-wide, founder-reported. Leads rented to local service businesses.
  • ·Bulk Mockup — $12K-$13K/mo consistently, founder-reported, Gumroad dashboard on camera. Solo, Vikash in India.
  • ·[Leftclick (AI automation agency) — and its founder's case for why the skill is expiring](/projects/leftclick-automation-agency-skill-decay) — ~$400K/month across businesses, founder-reported. 1 Second Copy peaked at $92K/month, Leftclick scaled to $72K in a month, plus $100K+ in consulting.
  • ·Shopify Partner referral commissions — creator-relayed, the weakest class we publish. The creator says he has seen agency partner dashboards running $5,000-$15,000/mo, and a bootcamp student added about $400/mo from one Plus referral on a store he did not build.

Note the pattern: the two largest numbers are not from selling products on Shopify. They are from selling to the people who sell on Shopify.

How much is each of these numbers actually worth?

Within this group of 41: 1 third-party verified, 27 founder-reported, 12 creator-relayed, 1 unproven — 68% verified or founder-reported. One verified figure across 41 businesses is a weak evidentiary base.

Evidence classCount in this groupWhat it means
Third-party verified1An outside source — platform analytics, a public record — supports the figure
Founder-reported27The operator stated it. Directional, unaudited, often revenue presented as income
Creator-relayed12Someone repeated a figure they heard. A lead, never a benchmark
Unproven1Claimed with nothing attached

This is the argument the site rests on: a founder-reported figure and a verified figure are not the same claim, and quoting them side by side without labels is quietly dishonest. Our method is at how we grade the evidence.

Claude Interactive Digital Products + IG Comment Funnel self-reported $10,025 in 24h and ~$50K from a single post with no dashboard proof — its own lesson being that the product was bait while the automated capture-and-close pipeline did the work. Calming Blankets did over $10M in sales with $1.5M profit in year one, $2.5M profit in year two, one month at $500K profit — then lost over $1M across the following twelve months after launching ten more brands and giving the winner about one hour a week.

Where the money actually comes from, versus where people think it does

Physical-product dropshipping is the over-discussed model. The one quietly producing our $33K/mo median is digital products sold through a single funnel — and adjacent to it, service work sold to merchants.

Most "how to make money from Shopify" content sells the store as the business. The Soccer Training Tools Directory makes $3,000-$5,000/month per directory on single commissions of $800 (BlazePod), $300 and $400 (Pixellot) and $500+ (weighted ball) — roughly $2,000/month from BlazePod alone on one site — with no store at all.

The Offerwall Economy audit measured $0 withdrawn after ~40 hours at about $0.33/hour, while FreeCash sat at #2 in the US App Store with 22,000 ratings and 4.8 stars. Store ratings are not income evidence.

How to use this without fooling yourself

  1. 1.Model both fee layers before you build. Plan tier from Shopify's published pricing, processing from the fee docs — then compare against the $33K/mo median.
  2. 2.Pick the model, not the platform. Digital products carry the median; physical products sit in a group with 4 documented failures. Start from all indexed ideas and the E-commerce Margins hub.
  3. 3.Refuse to plan on creator-relayed numbers. 12 of the 41 here are creator-relayed, including the $5,000-$15,000/mo Partner dashboards.
  4. 4.Write the plan against a neutral template. Use the SBA's guide to planning a business and state which of the 6 disclosing businesses you are imitating.

Frequently asked questions

Can I actually make money off Shopify?

Some people do, and we can name them. Of 41 indexed e-commerce and physical-product businesses, 6 disclose a clean monthly figure, median $33K/mo, range $6/mo to $400K/mo. The group contains 4 documented failures. Both ends are real outcomes from the same platform.

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

We do not publish a fee figure we have not verified — check the Shopify Help Center on payment fees for your plan and country. Our index shows the reverse view: Shopify pays partners 20% of the merchant's plan recurring, $6/mo on Basic, $16 on Grow, $60 on Advanced.

Is Shopify still worth it in 2026?

Depends entirely on the model. The disclosing median is $33K/mo, but 30 of the 41 businesses are one person and only 1 figure in the group is third-party verified. The platform does not decide the outcome — the product and funnel in front of it do.

How reliable are these how to earn money from shopify figures?

Moderately. In this group, 68% is verified or founder-reported: 1 third-party verified plus 27 founder-reported, with 12 creator-relayed and 1 unproven labelled rather than blended. Across the whole index of 406 businesses the split is 57 verified, 184 founder-reported, 121 creator-relayed, 44 unproven.

How many of the 41 indexed businesses actually disclose a monthly number?

  1. 1.The rest give annual totals, ranges, growth claims or nothing usable. Those 6 span $6/mo to $400K/mo, median $33K/mo. A thin sample stated plainly beats a wider one manufactured from figures we cannot check.
