A dating app that changed nothing about dating apps except who it's for — and does $400K a month in the most 'saturated' category on the App Store.

Upward is a dating app for Christians, and in Jason Lee's teardown of seven apps it carries by far the largest number: $400,000 a month. He introduces it as the moment his own assumption broke. "I think, you know, dating apps in general, they have a lot of demand, obviously. But they added another layer to this, which is just focusing on this specific group of people." The argument he makes for why it works is about sales friction, not product: "A lot of people who are religious, they do want to marry within their faith, mostly, which is why this app makes a lot of sense. It clicks right away, and you don't have to sell the idea too much." A generic dating app has to convince you it has better matches than the four already on your phone. A faith-specific one answers a question the user was already asking. Lee uses it as his headline proof for the video's biggest claim — that "a saturated market is an opportunity in disguise." Everyone says dating apps are closed. The biggest revenue figure in his entire teardown is a dating app. Our read: this is real and instructive, but it is also the hardest business on this list to copy, and we've tiered it accordingly. Read on for why.

The $400K/month figure comes from the revenue-estimation tools he cites across the video, not from Upward's team. No founder appears, no dashboard is shown, and nothing is disclosed about pricing, user count, acquisition channels, team size, or costs.
