An AI photo studio built on the premise that you can have photography without a camera — and a single influencer post that tripled monthly revenue and never gave the gain back
founder's stated exit target ~$100K MRR for PhotoAI plus InteriorAI · profit margin described as low because of GPU costs (founder-reported)
"I talked to one influencer, he posted about photoai.com, and MRR went from 12K to like 40 or 50K. Insane, right? And it stayed that way." Meanwhile the press coverage he got for the same product did nothing at all.

PhotoAI is the product Pieter Levels built after AvatarAI, and the difference in intent is the point. AvatarAI was a novelty he describes as gimmicky and short-term — an avatar pack you buy once. PhotoAI is meant to last: "the intention is to have a long term product that can stay even if you sell — it can stay for like five years or ten years, because the philosophy is that you can have photography without needing a camera." The product concept follows from the fine-tuning experiments that produced AvatarAI. You train the model on yourself, and then you can generate unlimited photos of yourself, in any setting, from a laptop. He describes the appeal as location-independence taken to its logical end: you're on a beach or in an office and you can produce the photo anyway. It is a photo studio without the studio, the camera, or the act of photography. The number that makes this entry worth reading is a distribution event rather than a product one. Pieter talked to one TikTok influencer, who posted about photoai.com, and monthly recurring revenue moved from $12,000 to somewhere between $40,000 and $50,000. His emphasis is that it held: "And it stayed that way." A single creator post produced a permanent three-to-four-times step change in the business. At the time of the interview he had also had the business valued, and named roughly $100,000 MRR for PhotoAI plus InteriorAI as the level at which he would consider selling. He also names the obstacle: multiples are based on profit, and profit is thin because of GPU costs.
PhotoAI inherited an audience rather than starting cold, and the sequence that built it is documented.

Data credibility: Founder interview on The Bootstrapped Founder podcast, first person, no dashboard shown. The headline figure is stated as a range in conversational speech — MRR went 'from 12k to like 40 or 50k' after one TikTok influencer posted about photoai.com, and 'it stayed that way' — so the post-jump number carries a $10K uncertainty band. The comparison with press coverage ('this press does almost nothing') is the founder's qualitative judgement, not measured attribution. The ~$100K MRR exit target covers PhotoAI and InteriorAI combined and is an intention, not an achieved figure; no revenue number is given for InteriorAI on its own anywhere in the interview. The claim that AI businesses were fetching 5-8x versus 2-3x for ordinary startups is his impression of the market at the time of recording, not cited data, and he says he 'got them valued recently' without naming the valuer or the figure. The low-margin claim is credible precisely because it is against interest — he volunteers that he had been charting it that week and that profit gets thin fast because of GPU costs. The stack details (PHP, jQuery, SQLite, GitHub, scheduled workers), the hired AI developer for model work, and the hired TikTok marketer are all founder-stated. Region is Netherlands because he says outright 'I'm Dutch'; he is a long-term digital nomad who describes splitting the year between southern Europe and Southeast Asia, so there is no fixed operating country. Third-party mentions (Danny Postma / headshotpro.com and his LinkedIn-hashtag keyword strategy) are hearsay about someone else's business and carry no numbers.
The mechanics are on record for the product PhotoAI grew out of. AvatarAI sold an avatar pack at $30, collected through a Stripe payment link, with a Typeform gathering the customer's uploads after payment.
The turn is a single event. Levels talked to one TikTok influencer, who posted about photoai.com, and monthly recurring revenue went from $12,000 to somewhere between $40,000 and $50,000.
Levels built PhotoAI so this stretch would not happen, because he had already served one. Around 2014 he spent roughly a year on a YouTube analytics product with a finished interface that nobody paid for, and what he took from it is a rule rather than a regret: he will not build anything until there are customers.
