Alex MacCaw dropped out of high school at 17 and went straight into a startup because he was, in his words, sick of school. Without a degree he could not get a US work visa through the normal route, so he wrote a book on programming — enough of an "extraordinary" credential to qualify for an O-1 visa. That book got him a job at Twitter, which he left after six months for Stripe, then a 20-person company. He was, by his own admission, a terrible employee. In his mid-twenties he started a company called API Hub — a hub that would wrap data sources in APIs, directly inspired by how much he loved Stripe's API-first model. He applied to Y Combinator twice with different companies and was rejected both times; the second rejection annoyed him enough that he went and raised roughly $3 million instead. API Hub became Clearbit. Eight years later it was doing $50 million in revenue with a few hundred people, and it was profitable. He raised a Series A in 2019 and stepped down as CEO about a year after that. Reflect came next, and he is unusually candid about why: "it's kind of therapy after leaving Clearbit." He had not written code in years and wanted to know if he still had it. He also knew that picking an idea meant committing five years, so he picked the thing he would enjoy — a writing tool, for himself. His framing was deliberately unromantic: "you know what the world needs, yet another notes app, that's what I'm gonna build." It has since grown to $20K MRR with a team of four.

The $20K MRR and the team of four are stated by the host in the introduction and are not disputed by the founder; the ~$120 ACV, the $1M community round with a dividend promise, the semi-bootstrapped history, and the Clearbit background ($3M raised, ~$50M revenue, few hundred people, profitable, Series A in 2019) are all founder-reported. Nothing is backed by a dashboard, a screenshot, or third-party data. The implied customer count of roughly 2,000 is our arithmetic from $20K MRR and a $120 ACV, not a disclosed number. On location: the transcript places the founder in the United States by way of an O-1 visa and jobs at Twitter and Stripe in San Francisco, and describes him currently sailing in the Grenadines; Reflect's own operating location is never stated.
