Lock your phone until you pray: a Christian take on screen-time control, subscription-based, with AI-generated personal prayers
58K downloads in 6 months
He didn't invent demand — he copied competitor Prayscreen and out-executed it. The app took 3 days to write; all the real work was in finding one video format that actually works, pumping out volume, and squeezing onboarding for everything it's worth.
Fewer bars = easier, cheaper, or faster for an AI-assisted solo builder. Editorial judgments based on the case details.
Mal Baron is a solo developer. He didn't set out to invent a new need — he dug through niches on Sensor Tower, zeroed in on a lane already validated by a competitor called Prayscreen (a “phone control + prayer” app for Christians), and decided to build the same thing with better execution. The product itself took him 3 days to write: Cursor with Sonnet as the workhorse, ChatGPT as a helper, no login, no database, everything stored locally to drive signup friction to zero. After that he barely touched the product — in the video he says the app went untouched for three months while all his energy went into distribution. The results are verifiable: he shows his App Store dashboard on camera — $21,000 in December, $15K in November, $10K in October, month-over-month growth above 50%. Cumulatively that's nearly 58,000 downloads, 6.7K ratings, a 4.9-star average, a 43% conversion rate, and $23.6 in proceeds per paying user. He spent about $9K on ads in December, driving cost per trial down to $1.88. This is one of the cleanest samples of “indie development in the AI era” available right now — and it tells you without flinching that an app you can write in 3 days is not a moat. The moat is in the two things he did afterward.
The first users came from posting, not from buying. Baron ran 12 accounts and pushed roughly 40 videos a day, and it took about 40 posts before a single format worked at all; everything before that was trial and error.

The money is a subscription, priced at two deliberate extremes: $49.99 a year or $9.99 a week, with a $20 annual win-back offer that fires when someone taps the X on the paywall. The weekly price makes the annual look obvious, and the win-back exists because a dismissed paywall is otherwise worth nothing.
The flywheel is organic video feeding paid amplification. Any post clearing 10,000 organic views gets rerun as a TikTok Spark Ad against the original post, tested from $20 a day and raised steadily each week, so the algorithm has already picked the winner before money touches it.
The flat stretch was short but punishing in shape: around 40 posts across 12 accounts with nothing catching. The useful thing is that the silence was never a verdict on the product.
