Connor Gillivan and Nathan Hirsch started Portlight while in college by buying textbooks from students and reselling them on Amazon. They moved from holding and shipping books in their dorm rooms to dropshipping so suppliers could fulfill individual orders. Over roughly three years, the company expanded into categories Amazon itself was opening up and built relationships with manufacturers and distributors. Gillivan says Portlight reached more than $20 million in cumulative sales, managed over 500,000 active listings at peak, and worked with around 1,000 dropship suppliers. A development team built software to manage listings, inventory and pricing, and about 30 freelancers supported daily operations. The transcript says their gross after cost of goods, Amazon fees and shipping was around 25–30%; net profit after payroll and other expenses was considerably lower. Portlight did little external marketing, relying on Amazon discovery and buy-box competitiveness, including hourly repricing. The business illustrates marketplace operations at scale, but it also carries platform, supplier authorization and low-margin risks.
