Hubstaff began as a way to replace the time tracking and proof-of-work software Dave used while managing remote contractors. He hired developers to build an initial proof of concept, found 15 paying customers, and then contacted Jared Brown on LinkedIn for technical help. They spent three months testing the founder relationship before committing. After a beta period, they rebuilt the product and began charging in August 2013. The company reached $22 million ARR, over 16,000 customers, and slightly more than 100 team members by the interview. It was bootstrapped for roughly a decade before taking investment. Its original buyer was a small business owner paying remote contractors who needed confidence that invoiced hours represented real work. The product has since expanded from time tracking into workforce analytics, scheduling, and visibility into how teams spend time.
