Astrotalk is an online marketplace that connects users with astrologers for consultations. Founder Punit Gupta started from a software background and built the first version around 30-minute video calls. The initial audience assumption was older users in smaller Indian cities, but demand came more strongly from younger people in tier-one cities. The product shifted to audio calls, chat, and per-minute billing, matching how users wanted to discuss personal questions. Trust was a major constraint in a market with fake practitioners, so Gupta used interviews to screen astrologers; it took about a month and a half to onboard the first three or four. The creator reports more than 15,000 astrologers and 3.4 crore registered users by 2023, and says Astrotalk controlled 80% of India's online astrology market. The creator also reports projected revenue of ₹600 crore and profit of ₹100 crore for the ongoing financial year. These are creator-reported figures, not audited results. The company later added tarot, numerology, and Astromall commerce.
Astrotalk's earliest customer path began by connecting users and astrologers through a 30-minute video call, but its strongest demand came from a different segment than expected: younger users in tier-one cities.

For Astrotalk, the first paid transaction came from a customer booking time with an astrologer through the marketplace, with payment based on minutes of consultation. The creator describes the product as a two-sided marketplace and says Astrotalk takes a commission from each transaction.
Astrotalk's flywheel depends on trust, availability, and repeat consultations reinforcing one another. The creator reports that by October 2019 the platform had close to a million downloads, revenue growing 25% month over month, and growth coming from repeat customers and referrals with zero marketing.
Marketplace growth can feel discouraging before both sides reach enough density. Astrotalk's first product did not create the expected rapid growth, and the team had to recognize that its target users were different from the initial assumption.
