Assembled grew from a narrow workforce-management problem inside customer support. The team began while the company was growing rapidly and support operations still relied on spreadsheets and manual scheduling. Its founders had experience at Stripe, and early customer conversations helped them connect staffing schedules to live queue data. Slack was among the early customers; Google also had a relevant workforce-management problem. The company started in 2018 but did not launch until 2020, and the founder describes the first dollar of revenue as very hard to get. Early implementations involved founders flying to customers every week to run onboarding themselves (a cultural value they call "get on the plane"), which helped adoption but could not scale past about 10 customers. As the company moved upmarket, a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar Robinhood opportunity forced the team to reason about which custom requirements would generalize. They wrote a detailed document comparing prior Stripe work with the new request and decided the reusable parts were worth building. That became a pattern for later large customers, including a first million-dollar annual account. In one year the company went from about 10 to 50 customers as it shifted to configurable product and passed $1M ARR. At interview time it had several hundred customers, tens of millions in ARR, about 122 employees and $71M in venture funding. Its growth also came through customer-support communities, where practitioners discussed tools and peers shared recommendations.
For Assembled, the first customers came through founder relationships and warm introductions in the customer-support technology network. The founders had spent time at Stripe and understood the operational pressure on support organizations growing quickly.

Data credibility: Founder interview. Tens of millions in ARR, several hundred customers, 122 staff and $71M raised are all founder-reported with no exact ARR figure or independent verification. The Robinhood contract was described as a multi-hundred-thousand-dollar deal (the figure is partly garbled in the captions); the jump from about 10 to 50 customers while passing $1M ARR was stated by the host and confirmed in conversation.
Assembled started in 2018, launched in 2020, and the founder calls the first dollar of revenue very hard to get. Early selling required patient, direct work with support leaders rather than a polished self-serve funnel.
Assembled’s flywheel strengthened when customer work revealed reusable product requirements. The team accepted some custom requests from larger accounts, but asked whether each request generalized to other companies.
A two-year gap between starting and launching can feel like evidence that a workforce-management product is unwanted, especially when the founders are engineers and customers still rely on spreadsheets.
