The best passive income ideas are the ones where somebody can show you the receipt, and in our index of 252 one-person businesses, only 67 disclose a clean monthly figure — median $15K/mo, spanning $6/mo to $1.3M/mo. Everything here is ranked by proof, not by how appealing the idea sounds.

That ordering rule is the whole article. Most ranked lists give you the number and quietly drop the evidence class; we do the opposite.

Which passive income ideas hold up?

An idea holds up here when a named business, a stated figure, and a traceable source survive together. We sort by the evidence behind the figure, never by how good the idea sounds.

Note what that excludes: 185 of the 252 never publish a clean monthly figure. They cannot be ranked on revenue without us inventing something, so they aren't.

Also: 24 businesses here are documented failures. Most lists of passive income ideas contain zero — not because failure is rare, but because failure does not get written up.

The IRS definition of a passive activity is narrower than the internet's — trade or business activity you don't materially participate in. Almost nothing here qualifies. These are businesses that eventually run on low weekly input, a different and more honest claim.

The ranking, and the evidence behind each entry

Ordered by disclosed figure. Read the third column before the second — it changes what the second means.

The top of that table is the weakest part of it. The $1.3M/mo Floe figure is a benchmark someone else hit; the person filming the clone earned $0. The $200K/mo TinyURL number is the target, not the builder's result.

Marc Lou's $77K/mo sits lower in revenue and higher in usable signal: founder-reported, with the denominator attached — 35 products, a 5% hit rate. The rarest thing in this dataset.

The Evergreen Curriculum Channel shows why evidence class matters. The same host valued the same channel at $82,000/month and, two weeks later, at $189,000/month. Nothing changed but the estimate. Browse the full list of indexed ideas and the pattern repeats.

How much is each of these numbers actually worth?

The split across these 252 businesses: 25 third-party verified, 106 founder-reported, 87 creator-relayed, 34 unproven. Verified plus founder-reported is 52% — nearly half the figures you just read trace back to someone describing a business they don't own.

Evidence classCount in this groupWhat it means
Third-party verified25A source outside the business confirmed the figure
Founder-reported106The owner stated it; no independent check
Creator-relayed87A video or article repeated a figure about someone else's business
Unproven34A number exists; nothing supports it

Here is the argument this whole site rests on. A founder-reported figure and a third-party verified figure are not the same claim, and quoting them in one sentence is a category error. The founder has an incentive and firsthand knowledge. The verifier has neither. A creator-relayed figure has the incentive without the knowledge — the worst combination available.

Our method is at how we grade the evidence. Across the whole index of 406 businesses the split is 57 verified / 184 founder-reported / 121 creator-relayed / 44 unproven — the same shape at larger scale.

One honest caveat, stated once: this index over-represents businesses that both succeeded and chose to disclose. The median is a comparison tool, not an expectation.

Why the usual rankings are wrong

Most ranked lists are sorted by search volume or by what the writer finds exciting. Sorting by evidence reorders everything — the flashy entries fall, the boring ones with clean disclosure rise.

  1. 1.Benchmark figures drop. The $1.3M/mo and $200K/mo entries are somebody else's ceiling, relayed. On evidence they belong near the bottom.
  2. 2.Boring niches rise. The receipt-scanning app sub-niche has no narrative appeal at all, and estimates of $60,000/month and $80,000/month sitting side by side across neighbouring apps.
  3. 3.Failures enter the list. The 24 documented failures teach as much as the winners. Rook's AI-avatar finance channel made $47K over two months with a peak of $6,000+ in a single day — and the lesson is that a $24.5 RPM did the work, not output volume.

The NoFap men's self-improvement app is the other worth naming: $6K/mo in its first month live from ~1,100 paying users. Small number, clear mechanism, no ambiguity about who reported it.

The Federal Reserve's Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking tracks how many households could cover an unexpected expense. That population reads these lists — and a benchmark figure misleads it most.

What sits in the middle of this ranking

The median disclosing business earns $15K/mo — one-fifth of Marc Lou's $77K/mo and a rounding error against $1.3M/mo. This is where a reader copying an idea from this list realistically lands, and the only number on the page worth planning around.

At that level you are looking at a single product with a narrow audience, run by one person; 246 of the 252 businesses here are one-person operations. The whole-index median is higher at $27K/mo across 106 disclosing businesses in 22 countries, which tells you adding even one person moves the number.

How to use this without fooling yourself

  1. 1.Set your target at the median, not the ceiling. Write $15K/mo on the plan. Not $1.3M/mo — that is a creator-relayed benchmark whose own cloner earned $0.
  2. 2.Label every figure you cite before you act on it. If it's creator-relayed, discount it: 87 of 252 figures here are, and the Evergreen Channel showed a 2.3x spread within one source.
  3. 3.Demand the denominator. Marc Lou's 5% hit rate across 35 products is the only usable ratio in the table. Ask "out of how many attempts?" before copying anyone.
  4. 4.Read the 24 failures first. The Ozon cross-border store group and the Chinese-herb story commerce account both document mechanism, not just outcome. Then write the plan — the SBA's guide to writing a business plan is the free template.

Frequently asked questions

How to make $1000 per month passively?

$1,000/mo sits well below the $15K/mo median of the 67 disclosing businesses here, but inside the documented range, which starts at $6/mo. The nearest indexed case is the NoFap app at $6K/mo from ~1,100 paying users in its first month — roughly 180 paying users reach $1,000 at that price point.

What is the highest paying passive income?

The highest figure here is $1.3M/mo, attached to the Floe-style agency SaaS benchmark — creator-relayed, with the person filming the clone earning $0. The highest founder-reported figure is Author AI at a peak of $300K/mo. Two different kinds of claim.

How can I make $10,000 a month in passive income?

$10K/mo is below this group's $15K/mo median and well below the whole-index median of $27K/mo, so it sits in documented territory. Businesses at that level are almost always one person and one product — 246 of the 252 here are solo.

How reliable are these best passive income ideas figures?

Partially. Here: 25 third-party verified, 106 founder-reported, 87 creator-relayed, 34 unproven — 52% verified or founder-reported. The other 48% comes from people describing businesses they don't own. We publish the class next to every figure so you can weight it yourself.

How many of the 252 indexed businesses actually disclose a monthly number?

67 of 252 — about a quarter. The remaining 185 either never stated a figure or stated one too vague to record. Across the whole index of 406 businesses, 106 disclose a clean monthly number, with 38 documented failures alongside them.
