These two lists are not the same kind of thing, and comparisons that pretend otherwise measure nothing. Claude Code is a coding agent that writes and ships the software. In most of our ChatGPT cases, an OpenAI model is what the product runs on, or what wrote the copy and the books. We index 49 businesses on the Claude Code side and 98 on the ChatGPT side, so read the Claude Code half as the thinner, younger sample it is.

Are Claude Code and ChatGPT even comparable?
Not as tools. Only as cohorts of businesses that credited one or the other. Claude Code is an agent you point at a repository; ChatGPT is usually the engine inside the product or the writer behind its content. Seventeen of our cases credited both, which shows how blurry the line is in practice.
That overlap matters. Across both sets we hold 130 distinct businesses, not 147, because founders use several tools in one week and say so on camera. Frey's luxury restroom trailer directory and Hero Analytics sit on both lists, as does the CoinSnap-style identifier app portfolio at $500K/mo.
So the honest question is not which tool prints more money. It is which cohort looks like the business you want to build.

What do the top cases on each side earn?
Both sides reach the hundreds of thousands per month and both bottom out near zero. Setting aside the cases that credit both tools, the largest figure we grade as verified is roughly $833K/mo on the ChatGPT side and $30K/mo on the Claude Code side. That gap is cohort size and age, not tool quality.
| Case | Credits | Published revenue | Evidence | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Identifier app portfolio (CoinSnap model) | Both | $500K/mo, top identifier app per Sensor Tower | ✅ Verified | Tier 1 |
| Buildern | ChatGPT | ~$160K/mo, $2M ARR, 300 customers | 🗣 Founder-reported | Tier 2 |
| Mine Marketing | ChatGPT | $140K/mo, QuickBooks refreshed live on stream | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| Hero Analytics | Both | ~$96.2K MRR, $1M+ ARR in 19 months | 🗣 Founder-reported | Tier 2 |
| Waitly | Both | $40K+/mo, 700 paying customers | 🗣 Founder-reported | Tier 2 |
| Profit AI | Claude Code | $30K MRR on the app, ~$40K MRR on services | ✅ Verified | Tier 1 |
| Mumigo transit app | ChatGPT | $30K/mo, mostly subscriptions | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| Subscribr | Claude Code | $30K/mo in subscriptions | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| Goji Berry AI | ChatGPT | ~$24K–30K MRR | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| Payout | Claude Code | $20K/mo, reached in 50 days | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| SiteGPT | Claude Code | $13K MRR, ~$500K lifetime | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
| Fluently | Claude Code | ~$100 MRR, barely breaking even on ads | ✅ Verified | Tier 2 |
Grades, on first use: ✅ verified means corroborated beyond the founder's word, usually a dashboard read on camera. 🗣 founder-reported means the operator said it and we could not check. 📎 creator-relayed means a third party passed on someone else's number. 🔮 unproven means no figure, or a target.
Fluently is in that table deliberately: a verified $100 MRR is worth more to you than an unverified $100K. Across cases publishing one unambiguous monthly dollar figure for their own business — 19 Claude Code, 36 ChatGPT — the medians are $15K/mo and $22K/mo. Ranges, annual-only totals, lifetime figures, daily rates, projections and non-dollar currencies are excluded, which is why those counts sit far below 49 and 98.
Treat the gap between those medians as noise from two unequal samples. Chatbase carries the largest ChatGPT-side claim at roughly $10M ARR, and the source itself says self-reported. We publish the caveat with the number.
Where do the cases on each side cluster?
This is the real difference, and it is not close. Twenty-two of 98 ChatGPT cases are digital publishing or AI content businesses, against 2 of 49 on the Claude Code side. Claude Code's cases are software and services. The ChatGPT cohort carries an entire publishing wing that Claude Code's barely has.
That follows from what each tool is. Nobody writes a children's book with a terminal agent. Sean Dollwet's KDP portfolio reports $2.2M in royalties and an account sold for $820,000; Modiversity's faceless YouTube pipeline reports $38,000/mo in AdSense. The one Claude Code publishing case, batch-generated Etsy clip art, uses the agent as a factory floor, not a writer.
The Claude Code side leans the other way: 9 of 49 cases are AI services and 5 are directory sites, both higher per capita than the ChatGPT set's 11 and 4. Local SEO content retainers run on a $100 subscription serving clients paying thousands a month. These are pipelines and datasets, not screens.
Solo operators dominate both: 37 of 49 Claude Code cases and 65 of 98 ChatGPT ones.

What do the evidence grades say?
Claude Code's set is verified more often per case — 10 of 49, against 13 of 98 — but neither is well supported in absolute terms. Roughly four in five figures on both sides rest on the operator's own word or a creator's retelling. Weigh the grade before the number, every time.
The ChatGPT side also holds more documented failure: 8 cautionary tales to Claude Code's 2. Cleo claimed $60K MRR in 53 days with zero proof, in a video that was itself part of the launch funnel. A faceless Facebook page verified $32.5K/mo and still earned the flag, because it lives or dies on one platform's payout policy. Nine distinct warnings across 130 businesses is not a failure rate. It is the number of people who filmed the bad part.

Which one should you pick?
Pick on what you are shipping. The cohorts sort cleanly by output: software and client services on the Claude Code side, products and published content on the ChatGPT side. Neither list supports a claim that one tool earns more than the other.
Shipping software you will maintain?
Start from the Claude Code cases. Payout reached $20K/mo in 50 days, Subscribr pre-sold 50 lifetime licences for $20K before the product existed, and Profit AI came from a non-technical founder correcting the model until the app worked. All three figures are verified.
Selling a service, an audit or a directory?
Also Claude Code, where 14 of 49 cases are services or directories against 15 of 98 opposite. The pattern that repeats is structured data nobody else has, or industry knowledge a client cannot buy from a prompt. What sells is the outcome, not the software.
Publishing books, courses or faceless video?
The Claude Code list has almost nothing for you; the ChatGPT list has 22 cases, from two self-published books earning over $97,000 in royalties in a year to the $38,000/mo AdSense pipeline above. Start there, and check the grade first: that wing is where the creator-relayed numbers concentrate.

What these numbers cannot tell you
Three things: whether the tool caused the outcome, what the real failure rate is, and how clean the attribution is. We only index businesses that published a number, so every quiet failure built with either tool is invisible here, and in every other roundup you will read.
Attribution is the weakest link. A men's self-improvement app verified $6K/mo in its first month and sits on both lists with a cautionary flag. "Built with ChatGPT" usually means "ChatGPT plus whatever else was open."

Frequently asked questions
The short version: neither tool is the better earner, and the cohorts are not the same shape. Claude Code's cases are software and services; the ChatGPT set is dominated by products and published content. Use the grades to decide what deserves your confidence before you copy anything.
Which makes more money, Claude Code or ChatGPT?
Neither, on this evidence. Median monthly revenue among cases publishing a clean figure is $15K on the Claude Code side and $22K on the ChatGPT side, but those samples are 19 and 36 businesses of different ages and types. The biggest number in either set, roughly $10M ARR, is self-reported and belongs to a product, not a coding workflow.
Why do 17 businesses appear on both lists?
Because founders use more than one tool and say so on camera. We publish the overlap instead of assigning each company to a single side. Any comparison presenting these as two clean, separate populations is hiding the same seventeen. It also means "built with" is a credit, not an exclusive attribution.
What does third-party verified mean here?
It means the figure was corroborated beyond the founder's own claim, most often a dashboard refreshed on camera or an app store payout screen. Founder-reported means the operator stated it and we could not check it. Creator-relayed means someone passed on another person's number. Unproven means no figure, or a target.
Why does the ChatGPT list have so much publishing and content?
Because ChatGPT is a writer and Claude Code is a builder. Twenty-two of 98 ChatGPT cases are digital publishing or AI content businesses, against 2 of 49 Claude Code cases. If your plan is books, scripts or faceless video, the Claude Code cohort has almost no comparable examples to learn from.
