01The full story: from GPU infrastructure to a $1.3B pivot

The heart of the Windsurf story is a textbook fast pivot. A few MIT people founded the company in 2021 under the name Exafunction, building deep-tech infrastructure — GPU virtualization and compilers — that helped other companies train and run models more efficiently. That business got to several million in revenue and was already profitable: a perfectly comfortable infrastructure company. The turning point was GPT-3.5 landing in late 2022. Founder Varun Mohan describes deciding, essentially during a weekend walk, to pivot completely into AI coding tools. Because they already had the ability to train and deploy their own models, they were able to ship Codeium — a completely free code-completion extension covering every mainstream IDE — very quickly, and shot to hundreds of thousands of users. As models grew more agentic, they realized that living inside someone else's editor capped the experience, so they built their own IDE: Windsurf. All told, the company reached a $1.3B valuation, with over a million developers cumulatively and hundreds of thousands of monthly actives, serving large customers like JP Morgan. Varun says his single biggest regret is that this pivot happened 3 months later than it should have — in a space where the technology is exploding, 3 months is a massive cost.
