Spectora is a home inspection platform for solo inspectors, larger inspection companies, and franchises. Its mobile app helps inspectors capture photos and write reports on site; the desktop product also manages customers, employees, payroll, communications, and payments. Cofounders Kevin and Michael Wagstaff started with about $5,000. Kevin brought real estate and marketing experience, while Michael built software. They spent six to nine months interviewing inspectors and agents before committing to the idea, then built an MVP around reducing report-writing time. Kevin sold inspectors a $100/month SEO service and built websites for them to gain access to the niche while the software matured. The founders bootstrapped to $10 million ARR before raising outside capital, a milestone reached over roughly six and a half years from 2017 to 2023. Kevin reports about $27 million in revenue this year, around 12,000 customers, and a team of about 100. That website side never went away: about 2,500 hosted sites at $50–$100 a month still make up roughly 10% of revenue.
Spectora’s first software prospects came through useful work Kevin was already doing for home inspectors. He started a niche blog about marketing a home inspection business, published YouTube videos and articles, and offered free SEO audits.

Data credibility: Kevin Wagstaff states the figures himself on the SaaS Club podcast: about $27M revenue this year, about 12,000 customers, a team of about 100, $10M ARR reached bootstrapped between 2017 and 2023, first $1M ARR around the end of 2018, roughly 50% historical EBITDA margins, and website hosting at about 10% of revenue. Founder-reported and unaudited; the auto-transcript garbles the company name ("Spectra", "Spectator").
The first dollars were not dependent on a finished software platform. Kevin sold SEO work at about $100 per month to 10 to 15 inspectors, giving the young company income while it learned how to reach and serve the niche.
Spectora’s growth combined three channels the founders could reinforce: conferences, search traffic, and customer referrals. Kevin says the team tracked trials and relationships after conferences, then kept investing in what produced results.
Before launching, Kevin and Michael spent six to nine months part time interviewing inspectors and agents, often struggling to get responses. Kevin bought coffee near an inspector’s workday and asked to see what existing software frustrated them.
