ShareChat built a regional-language social platform for Indian internet users and expanded into short video through Moj. When TikTok was banned in India in 2020, Moj launched within 30 hours and reached 160 million monthly active users over the following two years. ShareChat later acquired MX TakaTak for about $700 million. Scale exposed weak economics: in FY23 revenue was ₹553 crore against nearly ₹4,000 crore in expenses, while cloud costs were about ₹150 per user and ad revenue ₹25. Management stopped user-acquisition spending and overhauled infrastructure; cloud cost fell to $0.60 per user. Revenue later crossed ₹1,000 crore annually, losses fell to ₹219 crore in FY25, and February 2025 marked its first positive cash-flow month. The company is now testing QuickTV, free ad-supported microdramas. The video reports 98% of its users watch free and ad revenue around ₹100 per user annually at a 90% margin.
For a regional-language social product, the first customers are communities with a reason to participate in a language or topic that larger networks serve poorly. ShareChat focused on users who communicate in Indian languages, while Moj capitalized on a sudden opening in short video after TikTok's ban.

For a social platform, the first dollar usually arrives only after repeated attention can be sold to advertisers or a paid feature solves a clear user need. ShareChat's reported model leaned on advertising, but the earlier economics were upside down: about ₹25 in ad revenue per user against ₹150 in cloud expense.
The self-reinforcing loop is a dense supply of relevant content attracting repeat viewers, which gives creators an audience and advertisers measurable reach.
A social product can appear to be growing while each additional user makes the business weaker. ShareChat's reported response was to stop user-acquisition spending, reduce cloud expense through engineering work, and focus on regional-language differentiation rather than trying to beat global platforms everywhere.
