An “emergency button” app built for panic attacks and anxiety
4M+ downloads

Rooted didn't start with a business idea. It started with a real, awful panic attack that founder Anya had herself. What she wanted most in that moment was something that could immediately tell her two things — “is this actually a panic attack?” and “what do I do to get through it right now?” She combed the App Store and found nothing that genuinely answered either question. Anya has no technical background, so the first thing she did was confirm this wasn't just her problem: a quick look around her own life and online showed enormous numbers of people dealing with the same thing. So she made the thing she personally needed most into the soul of the product — a red SOS button. She hand-drew the core interaction in a notebook, taught herself Photoshop and Illustrator to turn it into wireframes, and finally found a student developer to build the iOS MVP cheaply. Growth after launch was glacial: 10K downloads in year one, 100K in year two, and it took until year three to reach 1M — all pure word-of-mouth snowballing. But that slow curve eventually compounded into 4M+ downloads and over $1M in cumulative revenue. The counterintuitive part of the whole story is that the core of the product has barely changed in five years, because that red button is the user's aha moment. It never needed to change.
