Dan Uyemura came to PushPress after a decade as a software engineer, opening a CrossFit gym in 2010 and finding that the available gym software was old, sprawling, and hard to adapt. He and his cofounders began writing code in 2011; the first client, Dan's own gym, was onboarded in 2013. The initial wedge was not an all-in-one business suite. It was software that helped gyms check members in and run the daily operation. The product grew through conversations with other gym owners, then added CRM, payments, lead generation, branded apps, websites, and other services. For nine years the company was effectively bootstrapped. A workout timer generated advertising revenue and brand awareness, while a free product helped new gyms adopt the system when cash was tight. COVID became an inflection point: PushPress gave support and money to gyms, built goodwill, and accelerated growth. The founder says the business reached $15M in annual recurring revenue with 100 employees.

Customer counts and early revenue figures are founder-reported. The interview also describes approximately 2,300 gyms near its conclusion, but the exact timing of that figure is not established.
