She turned KSh 200 into KSh 1.5M in eighteen months by buying thrifted dresses at KSh 50 and selling them on Facebook at KSh 1,000 — then used the whole pile as launch capital for her own made-in-Kenya label, and lost every shilling of it on the first production run
unit economics: KSh 50 cost, KSh 1,000 sale price · entire KSh 1.5M lost on a failed first overseas production run · own-label brand turning 10 in the year of recording
"I literally started the brand with 200 shillings. I bought four dresses worth 50 shillings each and I used to sell them on Facebook — take a picture, put it on Facebook, sell it for a thousand bob." Eighteen months of that funded the brand. One bad factory order erased it.

Christine Njoki went to fashion school in Nairobi with one goal: her own label. When she graduated, her friends went into medicine, law and corporate jobs, and she was, in her words, "there just in fashion school learning how to stitch." The plan terrified her. "What if I do all that — I start my brand, I went through the whole process — and then what if no one even likes it? Because then that means I wasted my time." So she found a legitimate-looking reason to delay: she needed capital first. That reason turned into the most interesting part of the story. She started with KSh 200. She bought four thrifted dresses at KSh 50 each, photographed them, posted them on Facebook, and sold them for KSh 1,000 apiece. She did that, over and over, for a year and a half, and grew it to KSh 1.5 million. Her actual target had been around KSh 1.1 million — she deliberately extended the thrifting by roughly three more months because she was scared to start the brand. It took her father to break the loop: "you're not here to do thrifting. That was not why you went to school. You explained you wanted to start your own brand. So you need to stop that thrifting and actually start it." Then the second act. She produced her first collection in China, and the quality came back all bad. She could not sell the inventory. "I basically lost all the money I'd saved for a year and a half." A year and a half of KSh 50-to-KSh 1,000 flips, gone in one order. She raised a bit more, restarted very small, step by step. The brand is turning ten in the year of the recording.
The whole channel was one Facebook post per dress. Christine Njoki started with KSh 200, bought four thrifted dresses at KSh 50 each, and moved them one at a time: "I take a picture, I put on Facebook, sell it for a thousand bob."

Data credibility: Founder-reported on a sponsored podcast panel (the episode states it is sponsored by Johnnie Walker), unaudited, with no dashboard, invoice, filing or screenshot shown. The credible and specific part is the thrift-flip unit economics, which she states plainly and repeatedly: KSh 200 starting capital, four dresses at KSh 50 each, sold on Facebook at KSh 1,000 each, grown to KSh 1.5 million over a year and a half against an original target she recalls only as 'about 1.1 thereabouts'. All figures are Kenyan shillings; the transcript gives no USD conversion and we have not invented an exchange rate. The failed production run — produced in China, quality all bad, entire inventory unsellable, all saved money lost — is her own account. Nothing is disclosed about the brand's current revenue, margin, headcount, customer count or unit volumes; the only scale marker is that it is 'turning ten' in the year of recording. Note two naming details: the brand is spelled both 'ICon' and 'Ikon' across the conversation (she states Ikon is her middle name Njoki reversed) and she gives the site as 'www.ikon.com', which is worth verifying before publication. Her handle is given as Chris Njoki on all platforms. Finally, the source business used no AI or software of any kind — the AI-assisted listing workflow described in this entry's playbook and build prompt is our own recommendation for a 2026 version, not something she did.
The first dollar was the first dress. KSh 200 bought four pieces at KSh 50 each; one photograph and one Facebook post later, one of them sold for KSh 1,000, returning five times the entire starting capital on a single item.
The flywheel here is arithmetic rather than marketing.
The dangerous stretch in this story is not an absence of sales — thrift flips prove themselves within days. It is the eighteen months in which nothing harder than flipping was happening.
