Across the 406 businesses in our index, 106 disclose a clean monthly figure and the median is $27K/mo, spanning $6/mo to $2.2M/mo. That median is a comparison tool, not a forecast — our index over-represents businesses that survived and then chose to publish their numbers.
We deliberately do not publish an annual median. Multiplying one disclosed month by twelve is the most common way this question gets answered wrong. Better a monthly number you can check than an annual one we invented.

What do business owners make in a year?
The defensible answer is monthly: $27K/mo at the median across 106 disclosing businesses out of 406, spanning $6/mo to $2.2M/mo. Anyone quoting a tidy annual salary for "business owners" is averaging incompatible things or annualising a peak month.
Why we refuse to annualise: the disclosed months are frequently peaks. App Portfolio Studio Model reports a peak of $2.2M/mo across 15 apps combined, 🗣 Founder-Reported. A peak is a ceiling, not a run rate, and twelve peaks in a row is not a business anyone has shown us. Only one entry here carries a genuine annual figure, and it is a documented case, not a median.
The index spans 22 countries, and 246 of the 406 businesses are one-person operations. A solo operator's revenue has no salary line inside it, so it is not comparable to an owner's take-home. Browse all indexed ideas.

How much is each of these numbers actually worth?
The index splits 57 third-party verified, 184 founder-reported, 121 creator-relayed and 44 unproven — 59% verified or founder-reported. This is the argument the whole site rests on: a founder-reported figure and a verified figure are not the same claim, and quoting them the same way is the default failure of every income article online.
| Evidence class | Count | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| ✅ Third-party verified | 57 | Confirmed outside the business — store intelligence data, filings, payout records |
| 🗣 Founder-Reported | 184 | The operator stated it, sometimes with a dashboard on camera. Unaudited, and usually revenue not profit |
| 📎 Creator-Relayed | 121 | A creator repeated someone else's number. Two steps from the money |
| ❓ Unproven | 44 | A figure with no artefact behind it at all |
Note the shape: 305 of 406 entries are relayed secondhand or founder-stated at best; only 57 clear the verified bar. We publish the weak ones labelled rather than deleting them, because absence of proof is itself information — how we grade the evidence sets out each threshold.
Note also what the classes do *not* tell you: none distinguish revenue from profit. Even a ✅ Verified figure is usually gross.
What the top of the range looks like
Three of the highest disclosures: App Portfolio Studio Model at a peak of $2.2M/mo across 15 apps, 🗣 Founder-Reported; The Viral App Monetization Machine documenting Cal AI and Lerna at $2M/mo each, ✅ Verified · Hard Data; Retake AI Selfie Editor at roughly $2M/mo, 📎 Creator-Reported via third-party Sensor Tower data.
What they share is structural, not attitudinal:
- ·A portfolio, not a product. The studio model runs 15 apps; the Viral App teardown also documents LazyFit, CoinSnap and Impulse at $700K/mo each. One winner funds the misses.
- ·Subscription pricing on app-store rails. Distribution and billing are rented from a platform that already has the customer's card.
- ·Third-party measurability. These entries are verified precisely because app-store intelligence tools can see them. Categories without that infrastructure produce far weaker evidence.
Just below, Outrank is pushing toward $1M/mo, 🗣 Founder-Reported, a tiny team plus contractors; Cluely reports $500K/mo, roughly $6M ARR, 🗣 Founder-Reported, about 13-14 people plus 60 contracted creators.
Two names come with a caveat you should carry: Quitter at roughly $500K/mo is 📎 Creator-Reported secondhand, relayed inside another interview, and AI Clone of Floe-Style Agency SaaS cites $1.3M/mo for the original benchmark while the person cloning it made $0.

What the middle looks like, which is where you will land
The median is $27K/mo, and here is the uncomfortable part: not one business named above is anywhere near it. Every widely-cited example sits in the top few percent, which is how readers end up with a broken mental model.
The middle is quieter and less linkable, dominated by the 246 one-person businesses here — operators who never appear in a "top founders" list because $27K/mo does not make a thumbnail.
- 1.NoFap / Men's Self-Improvement App — $6K/mo in its first month live, from about 1,100 paying users. Below the median, and a completely normal first month.
- 2.Rook · Turnkey AI-Avatar Finance Channel — $47K over two months, with a peak of $6,000+ in a single day. A spiky total, not a stable monthly line.
That second one is the argument against annualising, in a single data point. Plan against $27K/mo and treat anything above it as an outcome you have to explain. Ways To Make Money Online For Women and Ways For Teenagers To Make Money Online work from the same middle; the SBA's startup cost worksheet builds the cost side. Revenue medians are only half a plan.
What the failures in this group cost
We keep 38 documented failures on purpose. A revenue article without the failure side is survivorship bias with a chart on top, and every "average business owner income" page you have read is built only from survivors.
Cleo (AI Content Assistant) is the cleanest cautionary case: a claimed $60K MRR in 53 days with ⚠️ zero proof attached, from a team whose earlier product Mentions did $20K MRR in month one. Being unproven does not make it false — it disqualifies it as *evidence*. And the video making the claim is one link in that product's launch funnel.
Chai shows the opposite pattern and the only clean annual figure here: $30M/yr, 21 people, a $450M valuation. It started with a founder who could not afford the GPT-3 bill, posted the product to crowdfund it, then took 80K sign-ups in one day and crashed the servers. Demand arrived before the plan did — not a strategy you can copy, and we would rather say so than package it as one.
For the macro backdrop on consumer spending, the U.S. Census quarterly e-commerce sales release is a primary source. No founder's estimate replaces it.

How to use this without fooling yourself
Four checkable moves this week, each tied to a number above.
- 1.Plan to $27K/mo, not to $2.2M/mo. The $2.2M is a 🗣 Founder-Reported peak across 15 apps. The median comes from 106 disclosures and is the only benchmark-shaped number here.
- 2.Never annualise a single disclosed month. Rook's $47K over two months, with a $6,000+ single-day peak, shows how spiky these lines are.
- 3.Write the evidence class beside every figure you copy. 44 of 406 entries are unproven and 121 are relayed secondhand. If you cannot name the artefact, mark it unproven and discount it.
- 4.Put the cost column next to the revenue column before you commit six months. Use the SBA's guide to planning a business.

Frequently asked questions
What jobs make $1,000,000 per year?
Our index tracks businesses, not jobs, and it reports monthly. Entries at or above $1M/mo include App Portfolio Studio Model at a $2.2M/mo peak (🗣 Founder-Reported), Cal AI and Lerna at $2M/mo each (✅ Verified), and Outrank pushing toward $1M/mo (🗣 Founder-Reported). All are gross revenue, not owner take-home.
What percentage of businesses make $500,000 a year?
We cannot answer that honestly, and neither can most sites that do. Only 106 of our 406 indexed businesses disclose a clean monthly figure, so any percentage would be drawn from a self-selected sample of survivors. What we can say: several entries report $500K/mo — Cluely, Quitter and the Niche Identifier App Portfolio among them.
How much money do businessmen make per year?
The defensible figure is $27K/mo at the median across 106 disclosing businesses, ranging $6/mo to $2.2M/mo. We do not convert that to an annual number because disclosed months are frequently peaks, and because 246 of the 406 businesses are solo operations whose revenue contains no salary line.
How reliable are these how much do businessmen make a year figures?
Uneven, and we label each one. The index splits 57 third-party verified, 184 founder-reported, 121 creator-relayed and 44 unproven — 59% verified or founder-reported. Only 57 entries have an artefact outside the business behind them. Quote the evidence class with the number, or do not quote the number.
How many of the 406 indexed businesses actually disclose a monthly number?
- 1.The other 300 report in different shapes — annual totals, cumulative revenue, per-day peaks, user counts — or disclose nothing checkable. That is why $27K/mo comes with a caveat rather than a confidence interval, and why the honest range stays as wide as $6/mo to $2.2M/mo.
