How Much Is a Shopify Store, All In? Real Cost of Running One

A Shopify store's true recurring floor is the plan fee plus payment processing, and that floor is small: Basic runs $30/mo, Grow $80, Advanced $300, and Shopify Plus starts at a $2,300/mo minimum. Against that, the 41 e-commerce and physical-product businesses in our index tell a harder story — only 6 of them disclose a clean monthly revenue figure, and the median of that disclosing set is $33K/mo.

What does a Shopify store really cost?

Give up on the average. The honest answer is a spread: across the 41 indexed e-commerce and physical-product businesses, disclosed outcomes run from $6/mo to $400K/mo, and 30 of the 41 are one-person operations — which tells you the cost base most of them carry is a plan fee and a laptop, not an agency retainer.

Six of the 41 disclose a clean monthly revenue figure. That is the number worth comparing your cost estimate against, because it is the only subset where revenue and time period are both stated plainly.

Agency quotes describe a build. The businesses in our index describe an ongoing operation. Those are different purchases, and conflating them is how people end up with a $15,000 storefront and no customers.

What the real cost line items are

Four things recur, and only two of them are fees. Platform subscription and payment processing are set by Shopify and published — see Shopify's published pricing for current plan tiers and the Shopify Help Center on payment fees for the per-transaction rate, which varies by plan and country. Do not trust a round number for either; check the source.

The other two are yours:

  1. 1.Tooling. Email, SMS, apps. The Claude Interactive Digital Products + IG Comment Funnel entry is built on exactly this stack — an IG comment triggers ManyChat, which grabs the email, which feeds Omnisend sequences.
  2. 2.Paid acquisition. Uncapped and undisclosed in almost every case we index.
  3. 3.Your own hours. The line item nobody quotes and everybody pays.

The SBA's startup cost worksheet is a better template for this than any "Shopify cost breakdown" post, because it forces you to separate one-time from recurring.

What builders actually spent, by name

Almost nobody discloses a cost base. That absence is the finding, so we will say plainly where the number is missing rather than fill it with a guess.

  • ·[Bulk Mockup](/projects/bulk-mockup-photoshop-plugin) — $12K–$13K/mo consistently, shown on a Gumroad dashboard on camera. Founder-reported. Solo, run by Vikash in India. Cost base not disclosed; a Photoshop plugin sold through Gumroad has no inventory line at all.
  • ·[Molly Keyser's digital product business and the Freedom Creator Club membership](/projects/molly-keyser-one-product-one-funnel-digital-products) — $33,108/month, and around $475,000 in sales last year, of which she paid herself about $300,000. Founder-reported. That gap between top line and take-home is the only cost signal in the entry, and it is the most useful one on this page.
  • ·[Website Landlord (Rank-and-Rent Local Service Sites)](/projects/website-landlord-rank-and-rent-local-leadgen) — $35K/mo personally, $104K/mo company-wide. Founder-reported. Small team. Costs not disclosed.
  • ·[Soccer Training Tools Directory](/projects/soccer-tech-affiliate-directory) — $3,000–$5,000/month per directory, with single commissions of $800 from BlazePod and $500+ on a weighted ball. Founder-reported. Built solo, now run by his teenage son.
  • ·[Shopify Partner referral commissions](/projects/shopify-partner-plus-recurring-referral-commissions) — 20% of the merchant's plan, recurring: $6/mo on Basic, $16 on Grow, $60 on Advanced. Creator-relayed, not verified. Useful here mainly because it puts a hard price on each plan tier.

How much is each of these numbers actually worth?

Here is the evidence split for these 41 businesses, and it is why we publish the class next to every figure. Full grading method is at how we grade the evidence.

Evidence classCountWhat it means
✅ Third-party verified1An outside party confirmed the figure
🗣 Founder-reported27The operator stated it; often with a dashboard on screen
📎 Creator-relayed12A video or article reported someone else's number
❓ Unproven1Claimed, with nothing attached

That makes 68% of this group verified or founder-reported. Our position, and the reason this site exists: a founder-reported figure and a verified figure are not the same claim, and quoting them in the same sentence without the label is the single most common failure in startup content. Most of the internet publishes the number and drops the evidence.

One caveat we will not bury: this index over-represents businesses that succeeded and then chose to talk about it. The $33K/mo median is a comparison tool for judging a claim you have been shown — not a number to expect.

The cost that decides the outcome is not the build

The build is the cheap part. The median disclosed revenue in this group is $33K/mo, and the businesses that reach it are separated by distribution, not by how much they spent shipping the store.

Calming Blankets is the proof, and it runs the wrong way. It did over $10M in sales and $1.5M profit in year one, $2.5M profit in year two, one month at $500K profit — then a loss of over $1M across the following twelve months, after the founder launched ten more brands and gave the winner about one hour a week. An unaccepted offer of over $10M went with it. The store was never the constraint. Attention was.

There are 4 documented failures inside this group and 38 across the whole index of 406 businesses. That is the part competing cost articles never show you, and it is why all indexed ideas carry their failures in the same list as their wins.

How to use this without fooling yourself

Four checkable moves, each tied to a figure above.

  1. 1.Price the floor from the source, not from a blog. Pull the plan tier and the processing rate from Shopify's own pages before you budget anything else.
  2. 2.Set your comparison at $33K/mo, and remember only 6 of 41 got there on the record. If a quote implies that outcome is typical, the quote is selling.
  3. 3.Label every number you are shown. Verified, founder-reported, creator-relayed, unproven. In this group, exactly 1 figure is third-party verified.
  4. 4.Budget acquisition before design. Read How Much Is Shopify for the fee side, Shopify Templates if you are tempted to spend on the build, and the E-commerce Margins hub for what survives after costs.

For contrast on cost structure: Leftclick (AI automation agency) — and its founder's case for why the skill is expiring reports ~$400K/month across businesses, founder-reported, with a business partner and an agency team. Different model, different cost base, same evidence class as most of this page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?

It depends on your plan and country, so take it from the Shopify Help Center on payment fees rather than any article. What we can state: the plan itself is $30/mo on Basic, $80 on Grow, and $300 on Advanced, with Plus starting at a $2,300/mo minimum. Processing sits on top of that.

Do I need an LLC to run a Shopify store?

Nothing in our data speaks to entity structure, so we will not pretend otherwise. What the index does show is that 30 of the 41 businesses in this group are one-person operations — a signal about how little organizational overhead these businesses carry, not legal advice. Check the SBA's startup cost worksheet and a local professional.

How much does it cost to do a Shopify store?

The recurring floor is the plan plus processing. Everything else — tooling, ads, your hours — is discretionary and undisclosed in nearly every indexed case. Judge the spend against outcomes: disclosed revenue in this group runs from $6/mo to $400K/mo, with a median of $33K/mo among the 6 businesses that state a clean monthly figure.

How reliable are these how much is a shopify store figures?

Graded honestly: 1 third-party verified, 27 founder-reported, 12 creator-relayed, 1 unproven — 68% verified or founder-reported. Across the whole index of 406 businesses spanning 22 countries, the split is 57 verified, 184 founder-reported, 121 creator-relayed, 44 unproven. We label every figure because the label changes what the figure is worth.

How many of the 41 indexed businesses actually disclose a monthly number?

Six. That is the honest denominator, and it is why we publish a range rather than an average. Their median is $33K/mo, against a whole-index median of $27K/mo from the 106 businesses with a clean monthly figure. The other 35 in this group disclose revenue in a form too loose to compare.
