Fake Door Testing: What Does a Click Actually Prove?
Design an honest fake door test, separate clicks from informed interest, calculate a clear funnel, and decide which real delivery experiment comes next.
A fake door test measures interest in an offer that is not yet available. Someone sees a proposed feature or product, takes an action, and then learns that it is still being explored. The result can justify another experiment; it does not prove payment, successful delivery or retention.
Our position is simple: a useful interest test should leave the visitor informed, not stranded. State what is unavailable immediately after the interaction, offer an optional next step and preserve the difference between curiosity and commitment. The Chameleon recipe describes this method for feature interest and emphasizes relevant targeting and clear communication.

What question can a fake door answer?
It can reveal whether a defined audience takes a defined action after seeing a specific offer. It cannot reveal whether an unbuilt product performs well or whether those people will continue paying for it.
