How to Earn Money From Affiliate Marketing, With Honest Numbers

ProvenStartups·Published 2026-08-01

Affiliate marketing pays you in four ways, and they are not equal: recurring SaaS commissions and evergreen review traffic carry most of the money, one-off product commissions carry the least, and display ads sit underneath everything as a floor. Across the 106 content sites and blogs monetised by traffic that we index, 31 disclose a clean monthly figure and their median is $24K/mo — with a full range from $29/mo to $1.3M/mo.

That spread is the story. Anyone can quote a $1.3M/mo number; almost nobody says whether it was audited, stated by the founder, or repeated by a YouTuber who never saw the dashboard. A figure without its evidence class is not information.

How much can you earn from affiliate marketing?

Ranked by how much income they actually carry: recurring commissions on software subscriptions first, evergreen high-intent review content second, one-time product commissions third, display ads last. Across 106 indexed content sites and blogs monetised by traffic, 31 disclose a clean monthly figure, median $24K/mo, range $29/mo to $1.3M/mo.

One honest caveat: this index over-represents businesses that survived and chose to talk about money. Quiet failures do not publish revenue screenshots. We record 7 documented failures in this group and 38 across the whole index of 406 businesses — nowhere near the real attrition rate. Use $24K/mo to compare models, never as an expectation for your own site.

The revenue models, and which one actually carries the money

Recurring SaaS affiliate commissions dominate our data. Every business above roughly $100K/mo is selling software or feeding traffic to software, not selling physical products on a one-off commission.

ModelWhat it paysWhat it costs to run
Recurring SaaS commissionsHighest ceiling in our data — the businesses clustered near and above $100K/mo run on subscriptionsRequires audience trust and a genuine product fit; churn eats you if you promote badly
Evergreen review/how-to contentSteady and semi-passive — Making Sense of Cents reports about $40,000/month from thisYears of publishing before it compounds; that site has 10 years of continuous output
One-time product commissionsThin per sale — the ClickBank spirituality play we index runs on ~$50 commission per saleCheapest to start, so competition is brutal and traffic must be constantly re-earned
Display ads (AdSense)A floor, not a business — the TinyURL benchmark shows $200K/mo at 40M monthly visitsNearly free to run, but the traffic requirement is enormous

40M monthly visits to produce $200K/mo tells you the per-visitor economics of ads.

What this looks like at real businesses

  • ·[Mine Marketing (Selling Websites to Local Businesses)](/projects/mine-marketing) — $140K/mo revenue (QuickBooks refreshed live on stream) · <50 clients · 6 people. ✅ Verified · Hard Data. Not affiliate income: services sold to local businesses by a 6-person team in Maui, led by a former auto mechanic.
  • ·[Making Sense of Cents — The Ten-Year Affiliate Blog](/projects/making-sense-of-cents-affiliate-blog) — about $40,000/month semi-passively, solo, one evergreen post on stay-at-home jobs still bringing tens of thousands of new readers monthly. 📎 Creator-Reported. Evergreen review content plus recurring commissions.
  • ·[Outrank](/projects/outrank) — pushing toward $1M/mo, the fastest-growing line in Tibo's portfolio, a tiny team plus contractors out of France. 🗣 Founder-Reported.
  • ·[TinyURL Clone Link Shortener (Replit + AdSense)](/projects/tinyurl-clone-replit-adsense-tool) — benchmark TinyURL at $200K/mo on 40M monthly visits, built solo by a non-coder named Mikey. 📎 Creator-Reported.

That distinction repeats. In our [AI Clone of Floe-Style Agency SaaS](/projects/clone-floe-saas-codeguide) entry the original benchmark does $1.3M/mo and the person cloning it does $0. Browse all indexed ideas: the impressive figure often belongs to someone other than the narrator.

How much is each of these numbers actually worth?

In this group of 106 businesses the evidence splits 8 third-party verified, 47 founder-reported, 39 creator-relayed, 12 unproven. Only 52% is verified or founder-reported — nearly half the figures quoted about this category come from someone who was not in the room.

Evidence classCount in this groupWhat it means
✅ Third-party verified8Someone outside the business saw hard data — a live dashboard, an audited statement, a payout record
🗣 Founder-reported47The operator stated the figure themselves and attached their name to it
📎 Creator-relayed39A video host or writer repeated a number they did not personally verify
🔮 Unproven12A claim with no supporting artefact of any kind

A founder-reported figure and a verified figure are not the same claim, and quoting them with the same confidence is a form of lying. Our [Evergreen Curriculum Channel](/projects/evergreen-curriculum-channel-organic-chemistry-tutor) entry is the cleanest proof: the same host valued the same channel at over $82,000/month from AdSense, then at $189,000/month two weeks later on 16 July 2026 — a 2.3x spread on one channel from one source, the estimate's origin never stated. The rubric is at how we grade the evidence.

Where the money actually comes from, versus where people think it does

Display advertising is the over-discussed model; recurring software commissions quietly produce the $24K/mo median.

Cast Magic at ~$130K/mo MRR (creator-reported), Magai at ~$100K/mo and over $1M cumulative from a non-technical founder who started solo (creator-reported), TeacherZ at $68K/mo from revenue-tracking tools (creator-reported) — all recurring. The AdSense-only entries need tens of millions of visits to compete.

The ClickBank spirituality faceless affiliate play earned ~100K views on a single video in 28 days at ~$50 commission per sale — no recurrence, and the traffic resets to zero the moment you stop uploading. The Bright Side-style AI documentary channel benchmark sits at ~$39,500/mo in AdSense, classed 🔮 Unverified · High Potential.

74 of the 106 businesses here are one-person operations. Solo is normal, not the constraint people assume — see Programmer Income Beyond Salary: Real Numbers From Solo Projects.

How to use this without fooling yourself

  1. 1.Pick a recurring-commission vertical before you write a word. The models near $100K/mo all run on subscriptions; the ~$50-per-sale ClickBank model does not compound. Start from the Blogs & Affiliate hub and pick one category you can defend for years.
  2. 2.Write your disclosure line this week. The FTC Endorsement Guides for affiliate disclosure and the FTC guidance on disclosing paid endorsements online require the disclosure to be unavoidable, not buried in a footer.
  3. 3.Label every income claim you rely on. Assign a class to five figures quoted in your niche.
  4. 4.Set the target against the right number. Median is $24K/mo, floor is $29/mo, and only 31 of 106 disclose anything at all. Write a plan that survives the floor, using the SBA's guide to planning a business, then check merchant-side mechanics in Shopify Affiliate Marketing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you really make money in affiliate marketing?

Yes, and the range is enormous. Of 106 indexed content sites and blogs monetised by traffic, 31 disclose a clean monthly figure, median $24K/mo, range $29/mo to $1.3M/mo. We also record 7 documented failures here. The index over-represents survivors who chose to disclose.

Can a beginner do affiliate marketing?

Structurally, yes: 74 of the 106 businesses in this group are one-person operations. Magai reached ~$100K/mo starting solo with a non-technical founder (creator-reported), and the TinyURL clone was built by a self-described non-coder. Skill barriers are lower than capital and patience barriers.

How long did it take you to start making $5000 a month through affiliate marketing?

We do not publish timelines we cannot verify. The only duration figure we hold here is Making Sense of Cents: about $40,000/month semi-passively after 10 years of continuous publishing, creator-reported. Anyone quoting a 90-day path to $5,000 has no evidence class attached.

How reliable are these how to earn money from affiliate marketing figures?

Mixed, and we label each one. This group is 8 third-party verified, 47 founder-reported, 39 creator-relayed, 12 unproven — 52% verified or founder-reported. The whole index of 406 splits 57 / 184 / 121 / 44. Only the verified class, like Mine Marketing's $140K/mo shown live in QuickBooks, rests on outside data.

How many of the 106 indexed businesses actually disclose a monthly number?

31 of 106 in this group. Across the whole index, 106 of 406 businesses disclose a clean monthly figure, with a median of $27K/mo, 38 documented failures and 22 countries represented. The other three-quarters never stated a number, or stated something too vague to record.
